I find the idea of separating pain from suffering appealing. So often, we repress pain, or judge ourselves for feeling and responding to it, to our detriment. What's the best thing a friend can do for us when we feel pain? Empathize, soothe us, give us the space to acknowledge it. As I attempt to be a better friend to myself, I find nonjudgmental acceptance offering me more than an attempt to escape, avoid or judge the pain I'm in.

In also seems that by acknowledging and "welcoming" pain, we become by nature, less fearful. If we don't presume disaster or our own inability to cope, pain becomes a little more transcendent and a little less catastrophic (at least for me). There becomes inherently less to fear.

It's amazing what even a few minutes of silence, stillness, just being, can bring into our lives. Peace! Wisdom! Freedom!

I have turned smoking into a mindfulness practice - I buy only organic tobacco, roll my own cigarettes (which is a little meditation in and of itself), and when I step outside to smoke I just let myself be totally present to Nature, to my breathing, to the taste and the feeling of the smoke... each cigarette is a 15 minute prayer/ritual/meditation...

What you said about prisoners even finding ways to practice the dharma reminded me of the work of Bo Lozoff and the Prison Ashram Project. Bo is a great writer, and he works with people that are in prison - even on death row - and shows how anyone, anywhere, can find inner peace and compassion. His books are wonderful, here is his website if you might be interested:
